THE BERGENDSTIL FLOOR CABINET

The Bergendstil Floor Cabinet was born of a very practical problem: how do you add storage to an original 1935 bathroom without asking the room to become something it isn’t? Rather than alter the architecture or introduce conventional cabinetry, we designed a freestanding piece that could live comfortably among the bathroom’s original tile, fixtures, and exuberant period details.

 

The design wears its Jugendstil influence proudly. Flowing, botanical forms are cut into the walnut and layered over textured amber glass, allowing light and color to become part of the pattern. It is deliberately a little “on the nose”—a playful celebration of the organic lines, decorative glass, and marriage of beauty and utility associated with Jugendstil design.

 

Behind the patterned glass, three shelves provide useful storage while keeping their contents softly obscured. In our home, the Bergendstil holds the necessities of a bathroom that was never designed to hide very much. But nothing about it insists on staying in the bathroom: linens in a bedroom, glassware in a dining room, books and objects in a living room—it can wander wherever storage is needed.

 

The Bergendstil is unabashedly decorative, but never decoration for decoration’s sake. It lets a useful cabinet have a little fun—and lets a room keep its history without having to live in the past.
